Chapter 14
This is crazy. Iâm completely crazy. I have to be. Why else would I be willing to meet Kane Jordanâs family? Where was the little angel on my shoulder warning me that I needed to turn around and run? Not only that but to run fast.
Miraâs thoughts raced out of control with each step she took. Maybe she could claim insanity. His kiss had sucked out every last bit of logic from her brain, and she was now at the whim of a man who could charm the skin off of a snake.
Her legs werenât even fighting him as he tugged her toward the door sheâd recently gone through as part of her job.
Her job.
Dang it! What if his parents recognized her? There wasnât a chance that all of them wouldnât remember. Theyâd all seen her at different points during their stay. The probability that someone would catch on to who she really was continued to become a very real problem.
Miraâs knees locked up, and she pitched forward.
And of course Kane would catch her.
He stared down at her, that infuriatingly charming smile touching his lips. âYou okay?â
She nodded.
âLooks like youâre better at staying balanced on ice than you are with commercial-grade carpet.â He chuckled, causing the swarm of butterflies to come rushing through her body once more.
She blamed him for her inability to control herself.
Kane released her after making sure she was steady on her feet. His hand paused, hovering over the door handle. âAs much as Iâd love for you to walk through that door and meet my folks, I know that can be a really hard thing for some people. You donât have to if you donât want to.â
No. Of course I donât want to, her head screamedâbut not her heart. Nope, her heart seemed to be jumping up and down, shouting and whooping like a cowgirl on a mechanical bull during ladiesâ night.
Mira smiled broadly. âIf you want me to meet them, letâs do it.â
He kissed her hand again. Why did he have to be such a sweetheart? It made it so much harder to do what she was supposed toâdang it!
How had she managed to go so far off the rails on this one? She was supposed to let him down gently. He needed to know this wasnât going to work. And now she was meeting his family!
Her face flushed, but it was too late to back out now. The door had closed behind her, and they were walking through the foyer, toward the sitting room.
âMom? Dad?â Kane called. âIzzie? Come out here. I want to introduce you to someone.â He tugged Mira toward the couch, and they took a seat.
Izzie was the first to materialize from one of the rooms in the back. His daughter hurried toward the couch and climbed up into his lap. She stared at Mira with open curiosity. Her bright-blue eyes were the biggest Mira had ever seen, framed by fluttering, long lashes that might be the only thing to rival the butterflies trapped in Miraâs chest.
